[edit] Purpose
GOVIS and Open NZ teamed up to bring you the Open Government Data Day - 'you're only as good as your last release'. This free event was held on Wednesday 22 June at the Macs Brewery function rooms, Wellington waterfront.
Over the past two years, conversations around opening up government data have moved on from asking 'Why should we do this?' to asking 'How do we do this?'. The Open Government Data Day is a free day-long event that aims to generate answers to the 'How?' question and strengthen connections between government agencies and the developer community.
The event was aimed at public servants who are grappling with (or have overcome) issues around opening up non-personal data for re-use and people outside government who are interested in open data policy and/or development using government data.
The day featured presentations from people within government agencies who have successfully opened up their data, describing the process they followed and the challenges they overcame, and mini workshops/expert help sessions to answer the questions people have around opening up data (licensing, technology, business cases etc).
One of the major aims for the day was to get more government datasets released in time for the Digital New Zealand Mix and Mash NZ competition that will be run in August. We hope the event will get people talking about which datasets should be released, and how to make this happen.
From the event we wanted to see:
- people within government agencies equipped with the advice, tools and contacts they need to take the next steps in opening up their agency's data
- stronger connections between government agencies and the open data developer community
- more insight in the open data developer community into government processes and plans around opening up data.
