What We Believe
From Open NZ Wiki
We do things on the web that improve interactions between government and citizens.
Web technology enables better interactions between government and citizens. Government can inform, consult, and serve citizens better through the web. Citizens can use, check, and improve the services of their government through the web. Government departments can work better together through the web, reducing waste. Citizens can efficiently work together through the web to reduce the need for government services.
Tom Steinberg from MySociety said “don't get caught in the open data trap”. “We build things that make citizens lives better”. They are the consumer of data for the apps that they build, but they care about the apps for the citizens.
Purpose of open.org.nz:
- leadership/spokespersonship
- clearing house for information - fueler to feed networks
- administration/hosting for applications, the financial management around ongoing support for those applications
E.g. contact OpenNZ to get a sense of what open data/apps can do for you. “An advocacy group with a portfolio.”
We want to see a world where:
- things citizens want are communicated clearly to govt
- there are greater economic/social/cultural opportunities for citizens
- that government operates more efficiently and transparently
open.org.nz can connect existing groups/NGOs with Government
